Our Story: Building a Legacy, Together
Self-Built Legacy Foundations isn't just an organization; it's the embodiment of a lifelong commitment to seeing the Black community not just survive, but truly thrive. Founded on the deeply held belief in our inherent potential and the urgent need to dismantle the systemic barriers that have persisted for generations, our journey began with a simple yet powerful question: What if we, the Black community, became the primary architects of our own prosperity and destiny?
For too long, progress has felt like a fight for crumbs, a constant plea for equity. We recognized that while advocacy plays a vital role, true and lasting change requires building our own power – economic, social, and communal. This realization wasn't born in a boardroom; it grew from witnessing the resilience, the ingenuity, and the untapped potential within our communities. It was fueled by a profound respect for the sacrifices of our ancestors and an unwavering determination to build a future worthy of their struggle.
Self-Built Legacy Foundations emerged from this conviction: that by strategically harnessing our collective strength, fostering economic self-reliance, and empowering community-led solutions, we can forge a legacy of enduring well-being and opportunity. We believe in the power of business as a force for change, not just to generate profit, but to create jobs, build wealth, and reinvest directly in our communities. We are committed to empowering our neighborhoods from within, celebrating our rich heritage, and creating resilient spaces that reflect our strength and vision.
Our core values of justice, empowerment, legacy, respect for our ancestors, and belief in our inherent potential guide every decision we make. We are driven by a deep sense of responsibility to future generations, knowing that the foundations we lay today will determine the heights they can reach tomorrow.
This is more than just a mission; it's a personal commitment. We invite you to join us – not as passive supporters, but as active partners in building this self-determined legacy. Together, brick by self-built brick, we can create a world where the Black community has the resources, the opportunities, and the power to thrive, truly free from the constraints of systemic inequality.
Hi, my name is Lesha. I am the founder, dreamer, and believer of this worthy mission before you. I was born in Mound Bayou, MS, one of the oldest historically all-Black towns in the United States, founded by former slaves. Our history, heritage, ancestors, culture, music, struggle, strength, and destiny have led me here – to the genesis of Self-Built Legacy Foundations. Witnessing both the immense strength and the persistent systemic barriers within our community ignited a dream: a future where we are the architects of our own prosperity.
Where we must go, a future of true economic empowerment and self-determination, we've been striving towards for generations. What we must do, build our own enduring legacy of wealth and well-being, we've already begun through resilience and ingenuity. Self-Built Legacy Foundations is the next step on this journey, a dedicated effort to provide the resources, opportunities, and power necessary for our community to thrive, free from the constraints of systemic inequality. It is the embodiment of that dream and the unwavering belief in our collective ability to shape our destiny.
